Future-proof Performance: Gaffey doubles on-site chlorine generation for Craven Leisure Centre.

Craven Leisure Centre, operated by Active North Yorkshire, is a cornerstone of the Skipton community. With a packed schedule of classes in both its main 25m pool and it’s smaller teaching pool, seven days a week, the centre has seen a steady rise in popularity over the years.

A growing business

Gaffey initially installed a Hyprolyser® electrochlorination system over 10 years ago, as part of the plant room equipment that generates the safe, clean bathing water for the Centre’s pools.

The 6.5kg/day chlorine output capacity of the Hyprolyser® was more than sufficient for the centre’s needs at the time. However, as bather numbers grew and the introduction of UV pool water treatment impacting on additional chlorine demand, operational needs now exceed its intended capacity.

Impressively, the +10 year old Hyprolyser® was operating continuously 24hrs a day, without interruption, maintaining the chlorine production for both pools.

Despite this outstanding demonstration of reliability, keeping up with the required Sodium Hypochlorite production, it was recognised that this level of operation was unsustainable in the long term, and the unit would need replacing.

The challenge for change

Over the last 10 years, the plant room equipment has evolved, and replacing the unit entirely posed a logistical challenge. It would mean significant downtime for the Leisure Centres pools, causing disruption for the customer and bathers alike.

So, rather than removing the existing system, which remained in excellent condition, Gaffey proposed a smart, minimally disruptive upgrade. The team came up with a novel solution, simply replacing the power supply and electrolyser within the existing unit. With new, high-capacity components fitted, the Hyprolyser® output capacity has doubled to 13kg/day chlorine output (equivalent to 80litres commercial sodium hypochlorite). Additionally, the entire upgrade was completed within a few hours, ensuring minimal impact on centre operations.

Meeting the Centre’s growing needs

The upgraded Hyprolyser® now meets the centre’s current and future demands with ease. The team at Active North Yorkshire were happy with their original Hyprolyser® with all its sustainability, environment and cost benefits, and are thrilled with the improved performance and efficiency that the upgrade is delivering.

Craig Robinson, Duty Manager, Active North Yorkshire said about the Hyprolyser®, “We have found our Hyprolyser®, (which we have rented from Gaffey’s for over 10 years) to be an excellent, reliable and very cost-effective piece of equipment.

The Hyprolyser® has provided Craven Leisure with a fantastic and alternative primary Pool Water disinfectant treatment option, and it has been great that staff have only had to handle a salt product (rather than the more traditional / usual pool chemical disinfection products) to operate it.

With the Hyprolyser®, we have never had to experience (or worry) about ‘chlorine’ feedline’ / ‘injector’ blockages, as this issue and problem (which we repeatedly experienced with previous ‘Chlorine Treatment’ Systems) does not occur with Gaffey’s Hyprolyser Electrochlorination Systems.”
Regarding the upgrade, Craig went on to say, “We’ve noticed a great improvement in the efficiency of the Hyprolyser system. It’s definitely producing sodium hypochlorite at a much faster rate, which is excellent for us!”

“Thank you to the team at Gaffey for rising to the challenge—not only identifying the best solution but also carrying out the upgrade quickly and professionally. A service we very much appreciate.”
