Monmouth looks forward to a cleaner, greener future

Monmouthshire County Council set out to modernise its leisure facilities with a focus on sustainability, cost-saving and operational efficiency. The challenge was replacing an outdated granular calcium hypochlorite dosing system at one of their 25m municipal pools.

System Hyprolyser®
Model iSEC®-3

The plant room upgrade project was placed through leisure development specialists, Alliance Leisure and was procured using the UK Leisure Framework, owned and managed by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd.

Sterling Hydrotech, one of the UK’s most trusted pool filtration and water treatment specialists, recommended Gaffey’s Hyprolyser® iSEC®-3, a next-generation electrochlorination system.

The result was a cleaner, safer, and more efficient plant room, leading to an expanded contract for Sterling Hydrotech to upgrade three more local authority swimming pools and manage ongoing maintenance.

The challenge: outdated and costly

The old system relied on granular calcium hypochlorite, which posed several challenges including hazardous handling and storage, chemical transportation costs and unreliable dosing.

Monmouthshire Council wanted a solution that aligned with their net-zero 2030 target, reduced operational risks, and delivered long-term savings.

The solution: Hyprolyser® iSEC®-3 with ART

Sterling Hydrotech installed Gaffey’s Hyprolyser® iSEC®-3, a British-made, low-carbon water treatment system. Its Adaptive Response Technology (ART) automatically adjusts to changing environmental and site-specific conditions for consistent chlorine generation. The easy-to-use system also offers remote monitoring via mobile, iPad, or PC. It eliminates hazardous chemicals by producing sodium hypochlorite on-site from salt and water, removing the need to transport chemicals, and lowering costs through energy and water efficiency.

The results: A win for staff, swimmers and sustainability

The transformation was immediate. The plant room became safer with no chlorine fumes and a new spacious and ergonomic layout. Water quality improved with reliable disinfection. Financial and environmental savings followed through reduced chemical costs and lower carbon emissions. The success led to an expanded partnership, with the Sterling Hydrotech team now managing four of Monmouth council pools.

Committed to a greener future

Supporting Monmouthshire’s commitment to green leisure facilities, the project was part-funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. With £80k secured, the council invested in new pipework, electrical upgrades and low-carbon technology, to create and maintain a healthier environment for staff and swimmers.

Why Hyprolyser iSEC stands out

Monmouth Council were really impressed with both the install of the Hyprolyser® iSEC®-3 and the service they received from Sterling Hydrotech. The system itself isn’t just innovative, it’s built to last, with a two-year manufacturing warranty, five-year electrolyser warranty, and simple maintenance cycles for long-term reliability.

Blueprint for modern pool management

Monmouthshire Council’s upgrade proves that sustainability and efficiency go hand-in-hand. By choosing Hyprolyser® iSEC®-3, they’ve future-proofed four of their facilities – delivering safer swimming, lower costs and a reduced carbon footprint.
